Aménagement linguistique

Aménagement linguistique – A Policy for Ontario's French-Language Schools and Francophone Community

French-language education in Ontario is much more than 'the curriculum in French'. The province's francophone community looks to its schools to protect, transmit and enhance French language and culture.

French-language education is different from French immersion. French immersion serves children wishing to learn French as a second language. French-language education serves children whose parents have a right to have them educated in the French language and culture.

The Aménagement linguistique, or language planning policy, sets guidelines for all institutions in Ontario providing French-language education:

  • 12 French-language district school boards;
  • 6 French-language school authorities; and
  • 397 French-language schools.

Parents, students and other general readers can read an overview of the Aménagement linguistique policy in either English or French. Administrators may be more interested in the complete Aménagement linguistique policy document, which is available in English and in French.
