Class-Size Tracker

The government is implementing a real cap of 20 students in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 3 by the 2007-08 school year.

Reducing class sizes in the primary grades of our publicly funded schools is key to the McGuinty government’s four-year plan to improve student achievement.

This Class-Size Tracker helps you see the progress being made to reduce class sizes across Ontario.

Progress In The First Two Years

Halfway through our four-year plan to reduce class sizes in primary grades, we’re making progress toward our goal with:

More Small Classes

  • Nearly half (48%) of our primary classes are already meeting the target of 20 or fewer students.
  • Two years ago, one quarter of our primary classes had 25 or more students in them. Today, only 12 per cent do.

More Teachers

  • The government has provided school boards with funding to hire 2,375 more teachers to reduce primary class sizes.

Higher Student Achievement

  • In 2004-05, an average of 62 per cent of Ontario students met or exceeded the provincial standard in reading, writing and math, up from the average of 54 per cent who achieved that level in 2002-03.
