Resource-Based Tourism

The Resource-Based Tourism Unit is responsible for heightening the competitiveness and growth of Ontario's resource-based tourism industry through:

  • encouraging the industry to flourish in both an ecologically and economically sustainable manner;· improving the business climate to stimulate new job creation and investment;
  • proactive and integrated planning, analysis, program design and product development;· promoting activities that protect, diversify and enhance industry potential on Crown lands and waters;
  • facilitating strategic alliances and partnerships with key stakeholders to maximize tourism business opportunities;
  • meeting the legislative requirements of the Tourism Act and Regulation 1037 through the issuance of Resource-Based Tourism Establishment Licenses.

Tourism Marketing Opportunities

Resource-based tourism involves the use and enjoyment of the natural environment and resources on Crown lands and waters, including but not limited to activities such as hunting, fishing, visiting provincial parks and conservation reserves, camping, canoeing, hiking, snowmobiling, and wildlife viewing.

The Government of Ontario has recognized the importance of the resource-based tourism industry in Ontario through the directions provided by the Cabinet-approved Resource-Based Tourism Policy in February 1997.
