Query Basics

Searches are case insensitive

"Danforth," "danforth," and "danForth" will all return a match for "Danforth."

Only use words that are relevant to your search

For example, if you are looking for the "Danforth Collegiate Institute Summer School," you should avoid searching on "Collegiate," "Institute" and "School" because these terms appear in hundreds of school names. "Danforth" and "Summer" are good search terms because they appear only in a few records. As a result, your search will be more precise.

Do not include words like "and," "the," and "a"

These terms are too common to allow you to do a precise search.

Your search term may be only part of a word

For example, if you cannot remember whether Danforth is spelled "Danforth" or "Danford," you can search on "Danfor".

Accents must be used to search for French words

The database understands unaccented and accented characters as separate letters. For example, entering "Sauve" will not return a match for "Sauvé."

If you are using an IBM-type PC and your keyboard is not configured to type with accents, you may use the following codes.

While holding down the ALT key, enter the number of the accent you want to type using the number pad:
