Overview

In the government's vision, educators, students, parents, teachers, principals, schools, boards and the wider community work together in a genuine partnership to ensure good outcomes for all students.

Major Responsibilities

The ministry provides leadership and sets the direction for education policy in English and French-language elementary and secondary schools by:

• Providing funding to school boards and school authorities;
   
• Developing and providing supports for curriculum;
   
• Establishing provincial standards for assessing student achievement;
   
• Ensuring teaching excellence ;
   
• Setting policies and guidelines for school trustees, directors of education; principals and other school board officials;
   
• Setting requirements for student diplomas and certificates;
   
• Making regulations that govern the school year and holidays, the organization of schools and school boards, and the duties of teachers and school board officials;
   
• Evaluating and approving textbooks and other learning materials for use in schools; and
   
• Operating provincial schools for deaf, blind and deaf-blind children, as well as demonstration schools for children with disabilities.
