Award-winning 4-H members and leaders from Nova Scotia are attending two national 4-H conferences in Toronto beginning today, Nov. 1.

Eight Nova Scotia members received a National 4-H travel award to be part of the 65-member delegation from Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States attending the National 4-H Member Conference, which runs until Sunday, Nov. 5.

"4-H is a fabulous leadership development program that offers young people and adult volunteers an opportunity for personal growth," said Brooke Taylor, Minister of Agriculture. "The national conferences provide valuable networking opportunities for Nova Scotia delegates to promote our 4-H program and learn about 4-H programs in other communities."

Members will participate in presentations and workshops focusing on agriculture and how food moves from the farm to the plate.

Travel awards winners are: Benjamin Cook of Bridgewater, Lunenburg Co.; Carolyn MacDonald and Erin Sutherland of Brook Village, Inverness Co.; Natasha MacDonald of Boulardie, Cape Breton Co.; Robert Parker of Pictou, Pictou Co.; Jennie Pick from Rawdon, Hants Co.; Jillian Robinson of Aylesford, Kings Co.; and Lindsey Van de Riet from Shubenacadie, Colchester Co.

The National 4-H Volunteer Leaders' Conference will run the same time as the member conference. The leaders' conference brings together 33 adult 4-H volunteers from across Canada to help strengthen leadership skills and share ideas.

4-H leaders attending this conference are: Eva Cook and Jackie Groves of Truro, Colchester Co.; Shirley Giffin of Antigonish, Antigonish Co.; Leslie Harris of Deep Brook, Digby Co.; Mary MacPhee of Mabou, Inverness Co.; Sharon Shaw from Paradise, Annapolis Co.; and Eleanor Tree, of Waterville, Kings Co.

November is national 4-H month, providing an opportunity for members, volunteers, and supporters to showcase the 4-H program, which has been active in Canada since 1913. For more information on Nova Scotia's 4-H program, visit the website at www.gov.ns.ca/nsaf/4h .
