French language

Québec is French-speaking (the first language of more than 80% of the population). French is the official language and the one used most often in public life — at work, in communications, trade and business. Main mother tongues in Québec

Québec is committed to preserving and promoting its official language. French represents not only an essential communication tool, but also a common symbol of belonging to Québec society.

In order to assert the francophone identity of Québec, protect linguistic rights and promote the flourishing of the French language, successive governments have legislated to ensure the use of French in different domains of public life and guarantee the anglophone minority the use of its language and institutions.

To integrate into their new environment, immigrants who do not know French must make efforts to learn it. To assist them, the Québec government offers French courses.

In Québec, education is given mainly in French. The children of immigrants must attend a francophone school. English public schooling is also available, as well as schooling in private institutions.
