Furniture

When you immigrate to Québec, your personal and household effects are exempt from customs duties. However, this is subject to certain conditions and shipping may prove to be expensive. In fact, it is preferable to buy items like household appliances here so that they conform to Canadian standards.

Once you have moved into your new home, you will need basic furniture. Purchasing furniture new can be costly, so you may want to proceed gradually. Renting a furnished apartment is one immediate and cost-saving option.

You can save on furniture costs by taking advantage of sales and consulting the classified ads in newspapers. You can also buy used furniture at private home sales (commonly called “garage sales” – “ventes de garage” in French or “yard sales” – “ventes de ruelle” in French) or from volunteer organizations.
