Sponsorship application

The sponsorship application is the starting point of the sponsorship process. It must be submitted to the Government of Canada (Citizenship and Immigration Canada). It is the latter that determines who can be a sponsor, who can be sponsored and the situations under which the sponsor’s (guarantor’s) financial situation must be taken into account.

Procedure

To apply to sponsor a relative, you must send to Citizenship and Immigration Canada:

If Citizenship and Immigration Canada deems your sponsorship application admissible, your file will be directly transferred to the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés culturelles du Québec (MICC). Thereafter, the MICC will communicate with you for the remainder of the process.

  USEFUL INFORMATION

If you are abroad when you submit your application, contact the Canadian Embassy for your territory. This procedure, however, is restricted to the sponsorship of a spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner or a dependent child who is childless.

If your spouse or common-law partner who you wish to sponsor is already in Canada, contact Citizenship and Immigration Canada to find out about the guidelines for sponsorship in this case. You will be able to send his or her application for permanent residence at the time as your sponsorship application.
