Live-in caregiver

The feminine form is used for convenience and designates both men and women.

Once your employer has received a letter confirming that the offer of temporary employment extended to you has been accepted, the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés culturelles (MICC) will send you the instructions necessary for you to obtain authorization to work in Québec. The following is the specific procedure that applies when you are overseas.

Procedure

  1. The first step is to obtain an Application for a Québec Acceptance Certificate for Temporary Work. Carefully read the instructions that you will have received from the MICC. Then send to the Direction de la sélection des travailleurs – Validation des offres d’emploi all of the necessary documents to be provided with the CAQ application as well as payment of the fees levied.

If you meet the program’s eligibility criteria, an Application for a Québec Acceptance Certificate for Temporary Work will be issued to you by the Direction de la sélection des travailleurs – Validation des offres d’emploi.

Should you or your employer decide not to follow up on the application to retain your services, you must promptly notify the MICC in writing.

  PRACTICAL ADVICE
  • If you would like to authorize your employer to represent you in your dealings with the MICC, you must provide him or her with a signed written proxy. For this purpose, you can fill in the last section of the Application for a Québec Acceptance Certificate for Temporary Work entitled Optional Authorization to Employer.
  • The employment contract between you and your employer that you must sign and return is a legal document. Read it carefully before signing it.
  • All documents written in a language other than English or French must include a translation by an officially recognized translator in your country. These documents must include the translator’s seal and signature.
  • So as not to delay the presentation of your application, be sure to fill out the forms and declarations correctly and to provide copies of the required documents certified by the competent authorities. Documents to be provided with the CAQ application.

  1. Once you have received your CAQ, you must apply for a work permit and, if required, a visa for temporary residence from the Canadian Visa Office serving your country.

Carefully follow the instructions in the Citizenship and Immigration Canada guide Applying for a Work Permit outside Canada (PDF, 248 Kb).

Attach to your application the documents listed in the Document Checklist for a Work Permit (PDF, 33 Kb). Do not forget to include:
    - a copy of the letter confirming the offer of employment made to you
    - a copy of your CAQ for the CIC.

Fees are levied at this stage.

Health and security checks

If applicable, you and each member of your family will have to meet the health and security requirements of the Government of Canada. When a medical examination is required, it will be conducted by a physician designated by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and fees are levied.

  USEFUL INFORMATION
  • Expect several months, perhaps even more than a year, to elapse before receiving the documents authorizing you to come to Québec for work. This waiting-time varies depending on your country of provenance.
  • Find out about the provisions under the law regarding live-in caregivers by reading the document entitled Labour standards in Québec and domestics residing with their employer (PDF, 580 Kb) prepared by the Commission des normes du travail.

Upon your arrival...

  • At the airport, once you have completed the formalities with Citizenship and Immigration Canada, go to the Immigration-Québec office to inform them of your arrival and obtain information about the services provided by the MICC.
  • In the days following your arrival, it is important that you register with the Association des aides familiales du Québec. You can attend an information session available to new participants in the live-in caregiver program. You can then benefit from the assistance and counselling services provided by this organization free of charge for the duration of your participation in the program.
  • Do not delay enrolling in the French courses offered free to newcomers.
