French courses for non-francophonesThe ability to speak French will help you develop networks of contacts and expand your job opportunities. Since French is the common language of public life, the Gouvernement du Québec deems the learning of it an essential condition for the integration of immigrants. Therefore it devotes considerable resources to this area. French-language courses for immigrantsThe government offers a range of French-language instruction tailored to the diverse needs and schedules of immigrants. The Department services propose to immigrants a gamut of courses that vary in length and levels of proficiency. They are provided in partnership with public educational institutions and community organizations. Most universities, colleges (CEGEPs) and school boards include French instruction in their adult education programs for the general public. Some private language schools teach French as a second language. Intensive full time instruction formats are offered during the day in consecutive or intermittent sessions lasting 11 weeks. Registration in certain programs may qualify you for financial assistance. These courses will also introduce you to the practical aspects of daily life in Québec. In Montréal and in some regions, French courses are also offered in
the workplace. Only through registration with the Department are the courses
provided, completely free. Otherwise, while the courses may be free, they,
more often than not, may require a registration fee.
