In the Budget Speech of March 23, 2006, the Minister of Finance of Québec announced that the tax credit for home-support services for seniors would be enhanced. This tax credit, implemented in January 2000, enables persons aged 70 or older to receive certain home-support services at a reduced cost while remaining in their own community, thus improving their quality of life.
Please note that, beginning on January 1, 2007, the amount of the credit will be increased as well as the annual ceiling on expenses that give entitlement to the credit. Seniors themselves must pay the expenses for home-support services in order to claim the related tax credit. However, seniors will now have two choices when it comes to claiming the credit: they may claim the credit when they file their income tax returns, or they may apply for advance payments of the credit at any time throughout the year.
Seniors who currently claim the credit will receive a letter regarding the modifications to the tax credit towards the end of October 2006. They will receive the forms and all the necessary information to apply (beginning in October 2006) for advance payments of the credit for the 2007 taxation year.
