Couples who separate

If there is a parting of the ways...

Do you receive the child assistance payment? It may change because it is based on your marital status and your family income.
In addition, your separation or divorce may affect the amount of the pensions that you and your former spouse will eventually receive under the Québec Pension Plan.

In fact, the employment earnings recorded under your names for the Québec Pension Plan during your union will probably be added together and then divided equally between the two of you. Partition is automatically carried out for married or civil union spouses and on request for de facto (common law) spouses. We can even provide you with a simulation of partition, which will help you anticipate the financial impact of your separation or divorce.

Partition of pension plans (also called "pension funds," "supplemental pension plans," "private pension plans" and "registered pension plans") is not carried out automatically, as it is for the Québec Pension Plan. You must send an application to the plan administrator.

We can provide you with the information you need to make an informed decision about these matters.
