Death of a spouse

Following the death of your spouse, the Québec Pension Plan provides for certain benefits that could be paid to you if your spouse has sufficiently contributed during his or her active life. You could be entitled to 2 types of benefits: a death benefit and a surviving spouse's pension. In addition, if your spouse has children under age 18, they could be eligible for an orphan's pension.

For these benefits to be payable, a certain number of requirements apply, in particular, the deceased person's number of years of contribution.

Have you filed an application for retirement pension sharing between spouses ? Pension sharing ends at the end of the month following the death of one of the spouses. The surviving spouse will then be entitled to the same retirement pension amount, if any, that he or she was receiving before pension sharing began.
