Québec takes part in Jacques Cartier symposium

Thousands of academics, experts, artists, businesspeople and political leaders from over 40 countries participate each year in a symposium called “Les Entretiens du Centre Jacques-Cartier” (ECJC) — an opportunity to share experience, discuss social issues and forge links in the fields of scientific research, social economics and culture. An imposing Québec delegation of close to 250 people is taking part in the 19th edition of the ECJC, which gets under way today in Lyon, France.

Between now and December 6, the ECJC will provide a forum for stimulating debate on a wide variety of topics, including competitive hubs, urban planning, literary fiction and the future of pension plans. Nineteen colloquiums are on the agenda. Honorary doctorates will be bestowed on three members of the Québec delegation: Gérald Tremblay, mayor of Montréal, Luc Vinet, rector of the Université de Montréal, and Henri-Paul Rousseau, president and CEO of the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDP).

The ECJC owes its creation to dialogue between Québec and France’s Rhône-Alpes region. Today, this major scientific event draws researchers from across Canada, the Americas and Europe. In its 18 years of existence, it has welcomed some 10,000 speakers.

The ECJC is held three years out of four in Lyon. The fourth year it is held in Québec. The next Québec edition will be held in 2008, from October 5 to 7 in Montréal and from October 8 to 10 in Québec City.
