Québec appoints UNESCO representative

Michel Audet, a full professor at the social science faculty at Université Laval, has been appointed as Québec’s permanent representative within the Canadian Permanent Delegation to UNESCO, in Paris. He will be Québec’s first official representative to a United Nations agency.

The appointment flows from a historic agreement signed by the governments of Québec and Canada on May 5, 2006, which authorizes Québec to speak for itself during UNESCO proceedings, meetings and conferences. Audet will have diplomatic status. He will be called on to express Québec’s views on areas under its jurisdiction and issues related to its specificity, based among other things on its language and culture. One of the areas of particular interest for Québec is the implementation of the Convention on the Promotion and Protection of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, which comes into force on March 18, 2007.

Minister of International Relations Monique Gagnon-Tremblay has expressed her pleasure at the appointment, which will boost Québec’s international presence and efforts — a major objective of Québec’s international policy.

In the course of his academic and professional career, Michel Audet has been involved in a variety of UNESCO focus areas, including education, culture and information technology.
