Culture awards and scholarships

In the past few years, three joint awards have been given to Québec and Belgian artists whose excellent work has caught the attention of special selection committees.

Prix Québec-Wallonie-Bruxelles du livre de jeunesse (Québec-Wallonia-Brussels Award for Children's Book Author)

Created in 1984, this award falls under the Accord de coopération Wallonie-Bruxelles-Québec (Wallonia-Brussels-Québec cooperation agreement). It offers a bursary to the selected writer or illustrator and financial assistance to the publisher of the winning book as a means of fostering its promotion. The objectives of this award are to:

  • encourage the development and dissemination of French-language children's literature by paying tribute to a work by a children's author or illustrator;
  • stimulate work by writers and illustrators from the Communauté française Wallonie-Bruxelles and Québec;
  • familiarize both communities — Québec and the Communauté française Wallonie-Bruxelles — with their respective work;
  • foster commercial exchanges between Québec and the Communauté françcaise Wallonie-Bruxelles, mainly through co-publishing projects in the realm of children's literature.

The most recent award winners are Louise Leblanc (Québec) in 1998, Caroline Grégoire (Communauté française Wallonie-Bruxelles) in 1999, Anne Villeneuve (Québec) in 2000, Mario Ramos (Communauté française Wallonie-Bruxelles) in 2001, and Michèle Marineau (Québec) in 2002 and Anne-Catherine De Boel in 2003.

  • Encourage the development and promotion of the French language by paying tribute to the work of a writer-composer-performer or a performer;
  • Stimulate the production and dissemination of French-language recordings;
  • Familiarize Québec and the Communauté française Wallonie-Bruxelles with their respective work;
  • Foster commercial exchanges between Québec and the Communauté française Wallonie-Bruxelles in the realm of recording and the performing arts.

Prix Québec-Flandre de musique contemporaine (Québec-Flanders Award for Contemporary Music)

Created in 1988, this award falls under the Flanders-Québec cooperation agreement. After being given to Flemish composers and Québec performers for some 15 years, this award has recently been updated and now seeks to encourage contemporary music composition in both Flanders and Québec. Given alternately every two years, this award includes a bursary for the composer and the opportunity to perform the winning work before the public of the other community.

  • The award is intended for composers who have from two to ten years of experience and some of whose works have been presented in a recognized professional milieu.
  • The work must be written for an instrumental, vocal or mixed group (electro-acoustical and instruments) comprising between two and ten instruments.
The latest award winners are Pauline Vaillancourt (Québec) in 1998, Martin Valke (Flanders) in 1999, André Ristic (Québec) in 2000, Annelies Van Parys (Flanders) in 2001, Matthew Rizzuto (Québec) in 2002 and Petra Vermote (Flanders) in 2003.
