Tax credit for technological adaptation services

This credit is intended to provide support to businesses in a number of areas: collection and processing of strategic information; innovation; research; and collaboration with other partners in the business sector. The credit covers liaison and transfer services.

The credit is determined by multiplying by 50% the qualified expenditures the corporation incurs with an eligible liaison and transfer centre or an eligible college centre for the transfer of technology.

Corporations that may apply for the credit

A corporation may claim the credit regardless of the amount of its assets. The credit may also be claimed by a corporation that is a member of a partnership. The credit is granted to each member corporation for the taxation year in which the partnership's fiscal period ends. The amount granted to a given corporation is based on that corporation's share of the partnership income or loss.

Liaison and transfer

Liaison and transfer centres provide liaison and transfer services linking businesses, universities and other innovation partners. They help businesses to pinpoint their needs, facilitate communications between partners, and support businesses in the various stages of carrying out an innovation project.

College centres for the transfer of technology, with locations throughout Québec, are affiliated with CEGEPs. They play much the same role as liaison and transfer centres, but on a local and regional level. In addition, they provide technical training support.

The following liaison and transfer services are provided by these organizations:

  • locating and brokering research results
  • assessing business needs
  • bringing the various partners together
  • carrying out technical feasibility studies and assessing the commercial potential of innovation projects
  • supporting businesses in the various stages of an innovation project
  • carrying out software certification tests

Expenses giving entitlement to the credit

For the purposes of the credit, the qualified expenditures correspond to the following amounts:

  • an amount equal to 80% of the fees relating to liaison and transfer services
  • the fees for training and information activities that are related to liaison and transfer services provided by an eligible liaison and transfer centre or an eligible college centre for the transfer of technology (fees for training activities that are part of a regular training program do not give entitlement to the credit)

For a list of liaison and transfer centres and college centres for the transfer of technology, visit the Web site of the Ministère du Développement économique, de l'Innovation et de l'Exportation (click on "Agencies" under "Research, Science and Technology").

How to apply for the credit

To apply for the credit, the corporation must complete form CO-1029.8.21.22, Crédit d'impôt pour services d'adaptation technologique, and enclose the form with its income tax return or file the form no later than 12 months after the filing deadline for the return.

The return must also be accompanied by a copy of the receipts issued by one of the following:

  • an eligible liaison and transfer centre
  • an eligible college centre for the transfer of technology
