Survivors' benefits

  • To give entitlement to survivors' benefits, the deceased must have made sufficient contributions to the Québec Pension Plan.
  • The death benefit is a lump-sum payment of 2 500 $. It is paid on a priority basis to the person or benevolent society that paid the funeral expenses. After 60 days, it can be paid to the heirs.
  • The death benefit is taxable and must be recorded as income of the deceased's estate, regardless of the name in which the cheque was made.
  • If the deceased left a spouse, the surviving spouse could be entitled to a surviving spouse's pension. To be deemed to be the surviving spouse, certain rules apply.
  • If the deceased left children under 18, an orphan's pension could be paid to the person or agency who takes care of them.
  • To file an application for survivors' benefits, you must file out the appropriate forms.
