Hunting and fishing Nature’s bounty
For Québecers, beneficiaries of an abundant wildlife, hunting and fishing are more than just sports. They provide a unique opportunity to get back to basics and to re-discover the essential elements of their natural heritage. In the forests, lakes and rivers that make up this immense territory that is Québec, outfitters offer hunting and fishing enthusiasts lodging, equipment, guides and other logistical support—in a word, all the amenities needed to facilitate encounters with big caribou, moose and deer, black bears, and battling fish!
Salmon fishing
There are fishers, and then there are salmon fishers, an elite that has brought love and passion to this fine art. The most exciting challenge for the salmon fisher lies in the intricate relationship between fisher and salmon, a relationship based on respect. The fisher must seduce the fish with finesse and patience and attempt to decode its behaviour, interpret its reactions, coordinate its actions, until this lord of the rivers either admits defeat (although returning it to the water is strongly recommend, especially in August) or swims free.
Atlantic salmon, fished on 115 of Québec’s most extraordinary rivers, is an extremely precious resource, protected and controlled to ensure its survival. It is primarily found along the maritime shore of the St. Lawrence, in the fluvial corridor of the Saguenay and the tributaries of these two majestic rivers. These crystal-clear, gushing rivers are managed by organizations or businesses (such as outfitters) with exclusive rights, by five wildlife reserves boasting 500 km (310 mi.) of salmon rivers and by 19 ZECs (controlled harvesting zones) covering 1,300 km (810 mi.).
Salmon fishing requires a special permit and is only practised during specific periods. A salmon fishing trip in Québec is an ideal opportunity to introduce the whole family to this sport. Experienced trainers and attractive packages that include equipment and fishing rights ensure a great time for young and old alike. You can also visit several migratory routes and interpretation centres that will introduce you to the incredible life of this long-distance traveller.
Most outfitters and wildlife reserves offer the services of friendly, experienced guides, veritable modern-day coureurs de bois who will go out of their way to make sure your outing is enjoyable. Enjoy picturesque and welcoming inns in legendary locations. |
