Change of Address Service - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Who will the address change be applied to?

Medical Services Plan – when the account holder provides her/his personal information and address change information the address change will apply to all other individuals on the coverage, such as a spouse and/or dependent children.

Insurance Corporation of British Columbia – each driver in the household must submit his/her personal information and address change information separately.

Elections BC – each registered voter in the household must submit his/her personal information and address change information separately.

When I provide my change of address to ICBC does that change my address for both my driver’s licence and auto insurance?

No, at this point in time ICBC is only accepting change of address information for drivers' licences through the Multiple Address Change service. As a result of your move, you may need to change the territory on your Autoplan Insurance. Because your insurance is a legal document, your broker will require your signature to make changes to it. Visit your Autoplan broker to notify ICBC Autoplan Insurance of your address change.

What information is verified by the Multiple Address Change service?

  • Once you select the program area(s) you wish to notify, your date of birth is checked. If you selected BC Driver's Licence and/or Voter Registation, your date of birth is checked to confirm that you are old enough to drive and/or vote.
  • The effective date of your move is checked to confirm that it is within the past 5 years and the next 120 days.
  • Your old, new and possible separate mailing addresses are checked for validity against Canada Post information.
  • Your phone number must be the correct number of numeric digits.
  • Your Personal Health Number (PHN) must pass an algorithm to determine that it is a potentially valid number. (Staff at the Medical Services Plan will verify that it is the correct PHN for the account holder.)
  • Your BC driver’s licence number must be seven numeric digits. (Staff at ICBC will verify that it is the correct driver’s licence number for the individual making the address change request.)
  • (Your security keyword will be verified by staff at ICBC before they process your change of address request.)
  • Your weight, as entered on the back of your driver’s licence, allows up to 5 numeric characters and must be less than 454.2 kg. (ICBC staff will verify the weight information provided against their files.)
  • Your height, as entered on the back of your driver’s licence, allows up to 3 numeric characters and must be less than 304 cm. (ICBC staff will verify the height information provided against their files.)
  • The last 6 digits of your Social Insurance Number (SIN) must be 6 numeric digits. (Elections BC staff will verify the last 6 digits of your SIN against the information you have previously provided.)
  • Your Voter Registration Confirmation Card number must be 9 numeric digits. (Elections BC staff will verify the number provided against their files.)
I don’t understand the error message I received when I entered my old/new/mailing address?

Look in the Address Info section to see a complete list of the address error messages and suggested actions to take in response to each message.

I completed my personal information on page 3, went to look at one of the program privacy statements, and when I returned to page 3 I had to re-enter my ICBC security keyword. Why?

For your own protection your security keyword is not held on page 3 when you go to any other page and return to page 3.
