Medium Correctional Centres
Medium correctional centres employ a combination of features
to maintain control over the inmate population. Secure perimeter fencing and strategically located closed circuit
television cameras provide physical and technological security, in addition to high levels of programming and staff
supervision.
There are three medium correctional centres:
- Alouette Correctional Centre for Women;
- Ford Mountain Correctional Centre;
- Nanaimo Correctional Centre.
Within medium correctional centres, programs and activities
are provided in work, recreation, education, life skills and personal development to enable inmates to make positive
use of their incarceration.
Work programs ensure that custodial orders issued by the court
are carried out. They include farming and animal husbandry, sawmill and woodwork, gardening, salmon enhancement and
fire hose cleaning and repairing. Programs are often operated co-operatively with the federal government, other branches
of the provincial government or municipal governments.
Inmates classified to medium correctional centres do not generally
require the higher level of supervision of a regional correctional centre.
