Correctional Facilities in British Columbia
The Corrections Branch of the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor
General operates provincial correctional centres in British Columbia for adult men and women. Individuals who are
remanded into custody or sentenced to a term of two years less a day are incarcerated in these provincial facilities.
An offender who receives a jail sentence of two years or more typically remains in a regional correctional centre
for up to 15 days before being transferred to a federal penitentiary.
The Corrections
Branch operates nine correctional centres. Two are located on Vancouver
Island, two in Greater Vancouver, three in the Fraser Valley, one
in the Interior and one in the North.
Pretrial and regional correctional centres incarcerate inmates of all levels of risk, and focus on control, separation
and protection of offenders and the community. Inmates who are awaiting trial in custody are remanded in designated
pretrial and regional centres. Offenders who received a jail sentence are admitted to a regional correctional centre
and classified according to their assessed risk.

mission is part of the Branch strategic plan, Corrections in a New Era of Public Safety (2002-2005), and is consistent
