The 2006 BC Building Code and 2006 BC Fire Code use a new objective-based format. The objectives describe the overall goals that the Codes’ provisions are intended to achieve. All requirements in the Codes are linked to one or more main objectives. Minimum prescribed requirements have been renamed acceptable solutions.

The 2006 BC Building Code and 2006 BC Fire Code have a new organizational layout comprised of three divisions:

  • Division A describes the main objectives and functional statements. At least one objective and one functional statement are linked to each technical requirement to help users better understand the reason why a particular requirement must be met and to help them evaluate alternative solutions.
  • Division B contains code provisions, or "acceptable solutions." Objectives and functional statements are listed in a table at the end of each part. These references explain the purpose of the provision.
  • Division C contains administrative requirements.

Effective date

The 2006 BC Building Code and BC Fire Code will take effect on December 15, 2006.

Note: The 2006 BCBC requirements will apply to all buildings constructed on or after December 15, 2006, except those buildings for which a permit application has been accepted prior to December 15, 2006.
