CHUM SALMON RUN AT GOLDSTREAM GIVES STREAM-SIDE LESSONS ABOUT NATURE

Environment Minister Barry Penner joined Grade 3 students from Oaklands Elementary School in Goldstream Provincial Park as BC Parks Naturalist Darren Copley dissects a dead salmon. The Minister and the students learned about the lifecycle of salmon from Darren and the interactive displays at Goldstream Park’s interpretive centre. More than 300 classes of elementary school students visit the popular park, just north of Victoria, over a  seven-week period while the chum salmon are running. The relatively small size of the river that flows into Saanich Inlet and the easy access to the park make it a very popular spot to view salmon and later on, the dozens of bald eagles that congregate to feast on the spent carcasses of the spawned-out fish.
