Prime Minister Jean Chretien and Premier Gordon Campbell announce funding for the expansion of the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre on December 4, 2002. Most of the half-billion-dollar project will be paid for by the two governments on a matching, cost-shared basis, with the tourism sector contributing $90 million of the total.

Premier Campbell discusses the importance of the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre expansion to the 2010 Olympic Bid, and to the tourism industry in B.C. The centre generates more than $250 million in economic activity every year, but in 2001 Vancouver lost an estimated 50 conventions and another $146 million in economic activity because the centre is to small.
