BC Mushroom Industry Overview
The majority of mushrooms produced in BC are grown in the Lower
Mainland. There is some production in the Interior and elsewhere in
the province.
In 2002 there were approximately 50 producers who grew 52.5 million
pounds of mushrooms valued at $74.8 million dollars. About 95% are
eaten fresh; the other 5% are processed.
BC is almost self sufficient in mushrooms; about 93% of mushrooms
eaten in BC are grown here. BC produces about 25% of all
mushrooms grown in
Canada. About one-half of the mushrooms grown here are eaten here the
other half is exported mainly to the
United States.
