ELECTRONIC FILING AND PAYMENT OF
PROVINCIAL SALES TAX (Social Service Tax)

You can now file and pay your provincial sales tax using your personal computer at your office or home through participating financial institutions.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

As part of an effort to streamline the collection and processing of provincial taxes, the Ministry of Small Business and Revenue has established a service that allows taxpayers to send their tax return and payment electronically through several Canadian financial institutions.

Once you have enrolled in an online service with your bank, your application information is sent to the Ministry of Small Business and Revenue for review. Approval or non-approval confirmation is returned to your financial institution within 3 business days of receipt. Your bank will then either activate your online service, or advise you of the reason for non-approval. You will not receive a confirmation from the Ministry of Small Business and Revenue.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

When using electronic tax filing services provided by one of the financial institutions, please be aware that each financial institution has established a cut-off time and/or date to ensure your tax return and payment are received by the Ministry of Small Business and Revenue on time. You must be aware of these deadlines to ensure the Ministry of Small Business and Revenue receives your remittances on time.

A common reason for late filing is when tax returns or payments are submitted in the afternoon or early evening of the due date. In this case, you may exceed your financial institution's time lines for same day processing, and your return and payment may not be forwarded to the Ministry of Small Business and Revenue until the next business day, at which time it will be considered late.

To avoid this problem, please ensure you process your return and payment within your financial institution's timelines so that they may be processed the same day.

While we are always happy to address your electronic filing questions, filing on-line is a service provided by your financial institution. If you have any technical support issues or inquiries specific to tax transactions, please contact your financial institution directly.
