Kinsella's writing has had a significant impact on the North American
literary landscape. His talent and dedication to his writing have
allowed him to remain one of the most successful and prolific writers
in Canada. In the past 25 years, he has published more than 30 novels
and collections of short stories, hundreds of articles and reviews,
poems, stage and screen plays.
Mr. Kinsella's
work has been translated into several languages, and several of
his works have been made into movies and television series. The
most famous of these is his book Shoeless Joe, upon which the movie
Field of Dreams was made, garnering three Academy Award nominations.
Throughout his
career, Mr. Kinsella has continued to inspire and encourage emerging
writers. His entertaining work is also taught in remedial reading
programs and prison Adult Literacy programs. He has been honoured
by the creation of the W.P. Kinsella Scholarship in Fiction Writing
at the University of Victoria, where he was one of the first graduates
of the Creative Writing Program.
Mr. Kinsella
has received three honourary doctorates, and awards such as the
Stephen Leacock Award for Humour, the Houghton Mifflin Literary
Fellowship, the Vancouver Award, the Books in Canada First Novel
Award, and the Order of Canada.
