Registration for the First Nations Languages Conference, July 5-6, in Vancouver is now open!

The goal of the conference is to share knowledge in the fields of language education and language revitalization. Twenty-five workshops and networking sessions will be offered and there will be panels on the topics that include “Reconnecting the Generations,” “Mobilizing the Community,” and “Strategic Language Planning.”

Click here to Nominate a Language Champion! They will be recognized for their work at the conference. Deadline for nominations is June 10.

*New* Resource! Language and Culture Immersion Programs Handbook

We are happy to present our newest resource: the Language and Culture Immersion Programs Handbook, created by the First Peoples’ Heritage, Language and Culture Council Language Program.

The handbook includes tips for language teaching and learning, ideas for language immersion games and activities, as well as suggested language teaching methods and approaches. It is intended to be a practical tool for elders, community members, teachers and anyone else involved in language revitalization, especially language and culture immersion programs.

Announcing the recipients for the Aboriginal Arts Development Awards

This year, the First Peoples' Council distributed $530,000 in grants to 49 projects across B.C. Follow the links below to learn about the recipients from each program and their exciting projects.

Knowledge seeking filmmakers to create docs about B.C.'s First Nations languages

Knowledge (Network) is commissioning the creation of 13 one- to three-minute documentary short films about British Columbia's First Nations languages. This language revitalization project will celebrate the rich diversity of Aboriginal languages while bringing to light the urgent need to preserve them.

Proposals will be accepted from B.C.-based filmmakers until June 1, 2009.

The Aboriginal Language Initiative (ALI)
Provides funding for community and regionally-based projects directed at maintaining, revitalizing and promoting First Nations languages. ALI funds are distributed to provincial and territorial delivery organizations.

Language Immersion Camp 2009-2010

Creates opportunities for B.C. First Nations youth, children, families and Elders to be immersed in their languages and cultures through activities that facilitate the transmission of First Nations languages, traditional knowledge and values, as well as to nurture the relationship between First Nations people and the land.
