The Learning Roundtable was created in fall 2005 as a forum for education partners to discuss critical issues related to learning conditions in the public school system, such as class size and class composition.

The first meeting of the roundtable took place in Vancouver on Oct. 24 with Premier Gordon Campbell and was chaired by Education Minister Shirley Bond. Two representatives each attended from the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, the B.C. Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils, the B.C. School Trustees Association, the B.C. School Superintendents Association, and the B.C. Principals’ and Vice-Principals’ Association.

Minister Bond brought forward the idea of a roundtable on Oct. 6, after a meeting between former Labour Minister Michael de Jong and labour leaders, who spoke of the need for a forum where the BCTF could discuss learning conditions.

The Learning Roundtable is one of the items addressed in a report from the Industrial Inquiry Commissioner, Vince Ready.
