Throughout June and July 2003, Minister of Energy and Mines Richard Neufeld and a delegation of local government officials, First Nations, and ministry staff completed three educational/fact-finding tours. In June, he visited coalbed methane sites in the United States.  In July, he toured a wide variety of mine sites and quarries around British Columbia and in late July he toured a number of offshore oil and gas operations in the Cook Inlet in Alaska. These pages contain maps, photographs and a variety of reports and other information about these tours.

In July, Ministers Neufeld and Thorpe led a delegation from British Columbia to Cook Inlet, Alaska to meet with senior representatives of local governments and industry and to learn first hand about the effects of offshore exploration and development in their communities.

Throughout the month of July, Minister of Energy and Mines Richard Neufeld toured mining activity sites in British Columbia and met with community leaders to discuss the province's Energy Plan.

Minister Neufeld meets with Highland Valley Copper along a haul-road open pit mine in South Central BC.  Highland Valley ranks fourth or fifth of the largest operations of its type in the world with daily mill throughput of about 135, 000 tonnes.

In June, Minister of Energy and Mines Richard Neufeld led a delegation of 14 from British Columbia on a tour of coalbed methane (CBM) fields in Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico.  The purpose of the tour was to learn first-hand about CBM in the United States.  The delegation toured active CBM operations in the Powder River Basin in Wyoming and the Raton Basin in Colorado and New Mexico and met government officials, industry and stakeholders.
