Katherine Whittred was first elected in 1996 to represent the riding of North Vancouver-Lonsdale and was re-elected in 2001 and 2005.
Ms. Whittred was appointed Minister of State for Intermediate, Long Term and Home Care on June 5, 2001, a position which she held until January 26, 2004. Following that she served as Chair of the Government Caucus Committee on Education.
After re-election in 2005, she was appointed as Chair of the Government Committee on Social Development. She is a member of the Select Standing Committee on Health and the Select Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs.
Ms. Whittred also serves on the Strong Start B.C. Committee, a cross-government initiative to ensure that children and youth gain the best possible start in life.
In March 2006, she introduced a Motion in the Legislature to abolish the practice of mandatory retirement.
Before her election to the Legislative Assembly, Ms. Whittred was a secondary teacher. She and her husband also owned and operated a small manufacturing business.
Ms. Whittred studied at the University of Calgary where she obtained a Bachelor of Education degree.
Katherine and Don Whittred live in North Vancouver. Their grown children and their grandchildren live nearby.
