Stan Hagen was appointed Minister of Tourism, Sport and the Arts on August 15, 2006.
Tourism, Sport and the Arts is Mr. Hagen’s tenth ministry. Other portfolios (some of which he was appointed to twice) have included: Children and Family Development ; Human Resources; Sustainable Resource Management; Agriculture, Food & Fish; Education; Advanced Education and Job Training, Science and Technology; Regional and Economic Development; and Minister of State for the Vancouver Island/Coast Region.
Mr. Hagen first entered politics in 1972 when elected a Comox Valley school trustee and served until 1978. He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1986 in the riding of Comox. He was elected again in 2001 in the riding of Comox Valley, and re-elected on May 17, 2005.
Mr. Hagen currently co-chairs the Federal-Provincial/ Territorial Ministers Responsible for Social Services with the federal Minister of Human Resources and Social Development.
Highlights of Mr. Hagen’s career include chairing the Canadian Council of Ministers of Education and leading Canada’s delegation to the UNESCO Conference on Education in Geneva in 1989. He was instrumental in the creation of Science World; introduced Scientists in the Classroom, and the Passport to Education program.
Mr. Hagen has always believed in and supported the need for progress in science and technology in British Columbia. In recognition of that, the Science Council of British Columbia presented him with an award for the significant progress made in the development of science and technology policy in B.C. during his time as Minister Responsible for Science & Technology (1987-89). In 1991, the Canadian Advanced Technology Association (CATA) awarded Mr. Hagen with an Award of Distinction for Public Sector Leadership in Advanced Technology. In 1998, he was privileged to receive a honourary Doctor of Laws degree from Simon Fraser University.
Mr. Hagen and his wife, Judy, have lived in the Comox Valley since 1968, where they raised their five children.
Other accomplishments include: West Coast regional chair of the Modified Industry Labour Adjustment Program; member of the Comox Strathcona Regional District Economic Development Commission; treasurer of the Comox Valley Chamber of Commerce and founding president of the Comox Valley Community Foundation.
