Dennis was first elected to the riding of Bulkley Valley-Stikine in the 2001 provincial general election. He currently serves on the Legislative Assembly’s Select Standing Committees on Aboriginal Affairs and Crown Corporations and is a member of the Government Caucus Committee on the Economy and Government Operations. Dennis is also a member of the Northern Caucus committee and is Caucus Liaison to the Minister of State for Mining.

Previously, Dennis served on the Special Committee to Review the Police Complaints Process, the Special Committee to Appoint a Police Complaint Commissioner, the Government Caucus Committee on Communities and Safety, the BC Task Force on Mining, the MLA Pine Beetle Task Force, and the Small-Scale Salvage Review Committee. He was also Caucus Liaison for the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General.

Before becoming an MLA, Dennis worked as a private investigator, a provincial coroner, and a security patrol agent. After serving as a Regular Member of the RCMP from 1961 to 1989, Dennis performed general policing duties, spent two years with the RCMP's Musical Ride, worked in the General Investigation Section, and served as Prosecutor and Detachment Commander.

Dennis has served as the Smithers Community Services executive director. He was a member of Northwest Community College board, and represented this board at the Advanced Education Council of BC. Dennis also served as an arbitrator for the Timber Harvesting Contract Mediators and Arbitrators. Dennis has volunteered as an International Ski Federation (FIS) technical delegate, minor league baseball coach, hockey coach and Lions Club International secretary.

Dennis and his wife Edith married in 1966 and moved into the constituency in 1981; they have two children and three grandchildren. Dennis enjoys curling, downhill skiing, golf and jogging.
