Medical Services Plan Premiums

In British Columbia, Medical Services Plan (MSP) is a prepaid plan and account holders are billed for premiums one month in advance. Assistance with premium rates is based on family size, income and allowable MSP deductions. There are no special premium rates for seniors or students.

Effective May 1, 2002, the monthly rates for individuals and families are:

  • $54 for one person
  • $96 for a family of two
  • $108 for a family of three or more

Rates are subject to change, based on legislation passed by the province. See Financial Assistance for information on premium subsidies and payment plans.

Tax Receipts

The Canada Revenue Agency does not allow income tax deductions for either premiums paid to the Medical Services Plan or medical expenses paid by the Plan. No receipts are issued for tax purposes. For any information on the tax implications of payment of MSP benefits on behalf of employees, please contact CRA.
