B.C. RAISES PROFILE OF LITERACY FOR FRANCOPHONES

VICTORIA – Minister of State for Intergovernmental Relations John van Dongen brought the priorities of the B.C. francophone community to the table at a recent meeting of the Ministerial Conference on the Canadian Francophonie.

“Our government’s goal is to make B.C. the best-educated, most literate jurisdiction on the continent,” said van Dongen. “Literacy plays a central role in the well-being of every Canadian, and improving literacy will be the key for a strong future of the Canadian Francophonie.

“Our focus this year is showcasing success achieved in the field of literacy and how efficient federal, provincial and community partnerships can have a positive impact on people,” van Dongen added. “The conference is about planning for the stability and development of the Canadian Francophonie. It is difficult to achieve that goal if you do not also care for literacy.”

At their conference, ministers responsible for francophone affairs plan, implement and evaluate initiatives to increase service delivery capacity to their French-speaking communities. The conference also aims to ensure an ongoing vitality of the French culture and French language in Canada.

“We are really pleased with the work the government of British Columbia is doing on the francophone affairs, both provincially and nationally. We already see the positive impacts in our community.” said Michelle Rakotonaivo, president of the British Columbia Francophone Federation.

There are currently over 63,000 B.C. residents (1.5 per cent of the population) whose first language is French and approximately 250,000 (seven per cent of the population) who are bilingual.

LA COLOMBIE-BRITANNIQUE HAUSSE LE PROFIL NATIONAL DE L’ALPHABÉTISATION DES FRANCOPHONES

VICTORIA – Le ministre John van Dongen, ministre d’État aux Relations intergouvernementales, a fait part des priorités de la communauté francophone de la Colombie-Britannique lors d’une récente rencontre dans le cadre de la Conférence ministérielle sur la francophonie canadienne.

« L’objectif de notre gouvernement est de faire de la Colombie-Britannique la juridiction la plus scolarisée et la plus alphabétisée de tout le continent », a fait valoir le ministre van Dongen. « L’alphabétisation joue un rôle crucial dans le bien-être de chaque Canadien, et le fait d’accroître l’alphabétisation constituera la clé d’un avenir solide pour la francophonie canadienne. »

« Cette année, nous concentrerons nos efforts à mettre en valeur les réussites dans le domaine de l’alphabétisation et l’impact positif que peuvent avoir sur nos citoyens des partenariats efficaces entre le fédéral, la province et les collectivités », a ajouté M. van Dongen. « La Conférence se penche sur la planification pour la stabilité et le développement de la francophonie canadienne. Et il est difficile d’atteindre un tel objectif sans se soucier également de l’alphabétisation. »

Au cours de leur conférence, les ministres responsables des Affaires francophones planifient, mettent en œuvre et évaluent les initiatives visant à accroître la capacité de prestation de services aux collectivités francophones. Cette rencontre vise aussi à assurer la vitalité continue de la culture francophone et de la langue française au Canada.

« Nous sommes réellement heureux du travail du gouvernement de la Colombie-Britannique en ce qui a trait aux affaires francophones, et ce, tant à l’échelle provinciale que nationale. Nous voyons déjà les effets positifs de ce travail dans notre collectivité », a déclaré Michelle Rakotonaivo, présidente de la fédération des francophones de la Colombie-Britannique.

Il y a présentement en Colombie-Britannique quelque 63 000 citoyens, soit 1,5 % de la population, dont la langue principale est le français et environ 250 000 personnes, soit 7 % de la population, qui parlent le français et l’anglais.
