Working Forest Policy

Managing B.C.’s Land and Resources for the Benefit of all British Columbians

The Working Forest policy fulfils government’s commitment to enhance long-term forestry management while maintaining opportunities for conservation, other resource uses, and full public access to our forests.

The Working Forest policy reflects the balance of interests and social choices developed in local land use plans, and supports working families and communities by providing forest-dependent industries with a clear understanding of local priorities and objectives. Under the policy, BC's forests will remain in public hands. Provisions under the Land Act legally prohibit the sale of Crown land for timber production purposes.

A key component of the Working Forest policy is the development of area objectives for timber harvesting, conservation values and other uses. These objectives will be developed over time across the province, using land and resource management plans that have been developed with the input of communities, key stakeholder groups and First Nations.
