" How do I apply for a Special Occasion Licence?

Special Occasion Licences are regulated by the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch, but issued by the Liquor Distribution Branch.

To apply for a Special Occasion Licence, please visit the BC Liquor Store nearest you for an application form. To fill out the form, you will need to know the:

  • date and address of your event
  • number of people you expect to attend
  • hours you intend to operate
  • amount of alcohol you estimate will be required or sold.

In addition:

  • If you are planning to hold a public special event, you will need to take your completed application form to your local government and local police department for their approval (local government and/or police approval is also required for some private special events; please check with the manager at your local BC Liquor Store to see if your event will need this approval).

  • If you are applying as a representative of a club or other group, you will need to attach copies of your Serving it Right certificate and the certificates of any paid servers

Return the application form, licence fee and any attachments to the BC Liquor Store manager. We recommend that you apply well in advance - at least three weeks before your event is scheduled.

Please note:

If you are planning to sell liquor at your event, you must pay a Social Service Tax of 10 percent on your estimated liquor sales in advance of your event, when the Liquor Distribution Branch issues your licence. If you overestimate your sales, and overpay the tax you may apply for a refund through the Ministry of Provincial Revenue.
