Get a B.C. Identification card

B.C. Identification (BCID) cards are very useful if you are not a driver, and do not have a British Columbia driver's licence.

BCID cards are typically used as identification in any situation where you might use a driver's licence. (You must, however, have a valid driver's licence to drive a car in B.C.)

You can get a BCID card at any driver licensing office. Here's the process:

  1. Bring one piece of primary and one piece of secondary identification to any driver licensing office. (See list of acceptable ID)
  2. Pay the BCID card fee and get your photo taken.

Your new ID card will be mailed to you within 4 to 6 weeks.

Under 19 years of age?

Anyone who is 12 or older can apply for a B.C. identification card, but you'll need parental consent if you're under 19.

Fees for BCID cards

Original (valid for five years) $35
Duplicate $15
Renewal (valid for five years) $15
Renewal for recipients of B.C. Benefits (with proof — most recent cheque or letter from Ministry on letterhead) No charge
Seniors (65 and over):
original/duplicate/renewal
$15

BCID cards issued since 1997 have shown an expiry date. On April 1, 2002, BCID cards without an expiry date will not be recognized as valid identification.

Note that a B.C. Identification card is provided free of charge when you turn in your B.C. driver's licence because you no longer intend to drive.
