PROVINCE LAUNCHES STRONGSTART EARLY LEARNING CENTRES - December 14, 2006 - Coquitlam


Minister Reid joined Education Minister Shirley Bond and Burquitlam MLA Harry Bloy to launch 16 StrongStart early learning centres. StrongStart is a $1.4 million program to help pre-school age children develop reading skills and get ready for kindergarten. The announcement was made at Roy Stibbs elementary school in Coquitlam.

MINISTER REID SUPPORTS BOOSTER SEAT CAMPAIGN
November 19, 2006 - Richmond

Minister Reid visited the No. 5 Road Sikh Temple in support of the BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation's Booster Seat Awareness Campaign. The campaign focuses on providing children and their families with information about the importance and benefits of using booster seats.

Minister Reid was on hand at the Victoria school Thursday morning for the launch of the a-b-See Children's Vision Program Expansion, unveiled by the B.C. Association of Optometrists. The Program promotes the importance of early identification of vision problems in children.

Minister Reid joined 60 representatives of various children and families organizations from across the province to learn more about 'Hubs'. Neighbourhood hubs are centres where early childhood development, child care and family strengthening programs and services are housed under one roof to support B.C. families.

NEW AUTISM TRAINING PROGRAM
June 5, 2006 - New Westminster

Minister Linda Reid was joined by Douglas College president Susan Witter on June 5, 2006 to announce $550,000 in funding for a new introductory training course in autism intervention and an autism citation program. The new courses will mean more qualified behavioural interventionists and support workers to help families of B.C. children with autism spectrum disorder.

Linda Reid, Minister of State for Child Care, is presented with a painting during a recent visit to the Asante Centre for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome in Maple Ridge. Minister Reid and Randy Hawes, MLA for Maple Ridge-Mission announced a $150,000 grant to help the Asante Centre with their important work in FASD research, assessments and diagnoses for their youth justice clients.

November 25, 2005 - Abbotsford

Skip Bassford, President of the University College of the Fraser Valley (left), Minister Reid and Solicitor General John Les launch the Centre for Social Responsibility located at UCFV. “Social responsibility leads to stronger, healthier families,” said Reid. “The centre will provide a range of tools and resources to help build capacity in families and communities, whether through new research into addictions, or addressing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.”

CANADA AND B.C. SIGN AN AGREEMENT ON EARLY LEARNING AND CHILD CARE
Sept 29, 2005 - Vancouver

Prime Minister Martin and Premier Campbell joined Minister Dryden, Minister Reid, and Minister Hagen for the historic signing of the ELCC agreement, which brings $633 million to B.C. over five years for regulated early learning and child care for children under the age of six.

CHILD CARE FUNDING ANNOUNCEMENT
August 10, 2005 - Richmond

Minister Reid visited the Treehouse Early Learning Centre in Richmond to announce $8.1-million in funding for child care providers in B.C. The investment will result in the creation of more quality child care spaces, staff training and other service improvements across the province.

BC AMBULANCE SERVICE STATION TOUR

During a tour of the BC Ambulance Service station, Minister Reid joins paramedics outside the specially designed "Infant Transport" ambulance.

Ministers from provinces and territories in the Canada Northwest Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Partnership met to announce the inaugural meeting of a research network board newly created to address Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).

Minister Reid speaks with DJ Karen Daniels on JRFM radio at the Basics for Babies breakfast at the Sheraton Guildford Hotel in Surrey. 2004 was the most successful year for the program, raising over $150,000 and tens of thousands of pounds of baby necessities for families in need!

Province funds FASD awareness, education program.
Victoria-based FASD Community Circle has received a $100,000 grant from the Ministry of Children and Family Development. The funding supports programs aimed at increasing public awareness and improving the quality of life for children and families affected by FASD.

Research measures kids' readiness for school. Minister Reid announces the release of province-wide data that measures a child’s readiness for school. The data was released as part of the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP).

HELP is an inter-university research network, based at UBC Faculty of Graduate Studies, bringing together over 100 faculty members from six B.C. universities to conduct collaborative studies on Early Childhood Development.

May 13, 2004 - Housewarming for Esquimalt Military Family Resource Centre. The centre was moved from Belmont Park to a bright new facility at Colwood Pacific Activity Centre. The Centre provides a range of services to military families, including infant and toddler daycare, mom & baby group, and a resource library for parents.

March 27, 2004 - Presentation of the Carol Legge FASD Endowment certificates, March 27th at the "Swimming Upstream" Conference in Vancouver.

Carol Legge was our province's first Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder coordinator, the only position of its kind in Canada. Mother of three children, Carol was a tireless, compassionate pioneer in prevention and health promotion, especially when it came to FAS/E. Unfortunately, she was taken by cancer in December 2001. This endowment was created to honour her work.

February 12-13, 2004 - Parenting and Family Literacy workshop, Esquimalt. Minister Reid hosted five regional workshops on parenting and family literacy between January and March, 2004. The workshops were led by Mary Gordon, President and founder of Roots of Empathy.

December 8, 2003 - Minister Reid took part in a presentation of Spinoza Bear Gift Packs (www.spinozabear.com) at the Surrey Surrey RCMP Newton District Office. The Minister presented 66 of these packs to Ministry social workers. At the same time, 100 gift packs were presented to the RCMP and Municipal Police Victim Services offices by TB Vets and the Royal Canadian Legion for distribution throughout the Province.

Spinoza is a 17-inch teddy bear with a high quality cassette tape player and speaker hidden deep in his fur. Used as a therapeutic tool to help in the healing process, Spinoza's comforting physical presence and his library of tapes make him the ideal therapeutic tool to open lines of communication, sort out individual needs for self-expression, and act as part of a “first response” to a traumatic situation.


November 25, 2003 - Minister Reid attends the official opening of YWCA Crabtree Corner. Crabtree Corner provides emergency short-term child care and many diverse support programs for single mothers in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

November 22, 2003 - At the Federation des Parents Francophones Banquet in Richmond, Minister Reid spoke and presented a one-time grant of $4,900 from the ministry to distribute French language new parent information packages to Francophone parents in British Columbia.

November 21, 2003 - Launch of Canada Northwest Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Partnership Website in Winnipeg. Minister Reid is currently the Chair of this Partnership.

Sept. 27, 2003 - Premier Gordon Campbell and Minister of State Linda Reid with Chief Emma Palmantier of the Lake Babine Nation at the 2003 Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Medical Education Symposium. A new province-wide strategic plan for FASD service and prevention was unveiled by the Premier at the symposium.
