is an exciting new program that provides
work opportunities for students and recent graduates who may be considering a career in
the environmental sector.
Projects undertaken within this program provide Corps members
a chance to gain valuable, first-hand experience in a wide variety of scientific and
technical roles that will contribute to conserving and enhancing British Columbia's

Project Basics
Projects may be as long as nine months and are located in every region of the province.
Because the work is consistent with priorities of the Ministry of Environment,
participants make an important contribution to environmental conservation, protection
and stewardship. These projects provide Corps members with the opportunity to acquire
practical knowledge and develop or improve professional skills under the mentorship of
experienced Ministry staff.

Why the Corps
Significant opportunities for employment in the environmental sector are developing as
aging staff in both government and the private sector retire in growing numbers. However,
it is often very hard to compete for positions with these employers because of the difficulty
acquiring initial experience at the beginning of a career. The Conservation Corps is designed
to bridge that gap by offering those vital "first jobs." It is hoped that the experience
acquired from involvement with these projects will be the foundation leading to other career
opportunities.
The Conservation Corps was launched in Spring 2005 and more than 150 individuals were hired
during the first year of operation. Each year, projects are developed that will address
important environmental concerns throughout the province.
