A shortage of skilled workers in British Columbia and Alberta has community colleges and technical institutes in both provinces joining forces to strengthen post-secondary education, announced Premier Gordon Campbell today. |

AGREEMENT SETTLES DECADES OF FLOODING IMPACTS
The Province of British Columbia and BC Hydro have reached Agreements in Principle (AIP) with the Tsay Keh Dene Band and the Kwadacha Nation that will address the impacts of flooding from the Williston Reservoir on these First Nations in the Peace River Valley region. The Premier made the announcement in Victoria on December 12, 2006. |

DAY OF REMEMBRANCE
Premier Gordon Campbell took part in the Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women ceremony at the B.C. Legislature on December 6th, 2006. The event remembers the victims of the Montreal massacre and honours all women affected by violence. |

NATIONAL SUMMIT ON ABORGINAL HEALTH
Premier Campbell and National Chief Phil Fontaine of the Assembly of First Nations co-chaired The National Summit on Aboriginal Health on November 28th. Representatives from federal, provincial and territorial governments and First Nations, Inuit and Métis leaders reaffirmed their commitment to close the health gap that exists between Aboriginal peoples and other Canadians within a decade. |

At a special ceremony with Canadian veterans on November 11, Premier Gordon Campbell presented the 30,000th B.C. Veteran Licence Plate to 81-year-old Anna Allman, who served as a Lance Corporal in the Canadian Women's Army Corps from 1944 to 1945. |

INCREASED FUNDING FOR IMMIGRANTS
Immigrants will be better able to adapt to life in their new home and contribute to the social and economic future of B.C. with an additional $71.5 million in federal funding for settlement programs over the next two years. Premier Gordon Campbell, Attorney General Wally Oppal and federal Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Monte Solberg made the announcement on November 10, 2006. |

WAR HERO'S PIPES RECEIVED IN CEREMONY AT LEGISLATURE
The bagpipes of James Richardson, the only Canadian piper to be awarded the Victoria Cross, were received by Premier Gordon Campbell and Speaker Bill Barisoff at a special ceremony on the steps of the B.C. legislature on November 8, 2006. The pipes are now on public display at the legislature. |

GOVERNMENT AND FIRST NATION INITIAL HISTORIC AGREEMENT
Premier Gordon Campbell, the Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister
of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Lheidli T'enneh Chief
Dominic Frederick witnessed the joint initialling of the first Final
Agreement reached under the British Columbia Treaty Process on October
29, 2006. The agreement includes self-government provisions and defines
Lheidli T'enneh's rights to resources such as wildlife, fish, timber
and sub-surface minerals. |

Premier Campbell officially opened the Gordon and Leslie Diamond
Health Care Centre at Vancouver General Hospital on October 20, 2006.
The $95-million out-patient care centre is the first major health facility
in B.C. to be completed as a public-private partnership. |

OPENING UP THE ASIA-PACIFIC
Premier Gordon Campbell was on hand to thank Prime Minister Stephen
Harper as he announced his commitment to the Asia-Pacific Gateway and
Corridor Initiative on October 11, 2006. Harper announced $591 million
to help Canada capture a larger share of the West Coast shipping market.
A total of $321 million will be immediately committed to a variety of
infrastructure, transportation technology and border security projects
in Western Canada. |

The Conversation on Health was the focus of this year's Provincial
Congress. The congress brought together all of British Columbia's members
of the legislative assembly, members of Parliament and senators. It also
included mayors from the province's 15 largest cities, the presidents
of the five regional municipal associations, the president of the Union
of B.C. Municipalities, and Aboriginal leaders. |

Premier Gordon Campbell participated in Raise-a-Reader Day in
British Columbia on September 28, 2006. The Provincial Government is
again matching all donations collected from campaigns in Vancouver and
Victoria. The event has raised more than $2.45 million in the decade
since the Vancouver Sun started the literacy project to support children
and family literacy in British Columbia. |

$4 MILLION FOR HAIDA HERITAGE CENTRE
The Province contributed $4 million towards the Haida Heritage Centre at Qay'llnagaay project, which will become an international tourism destination showcasing Haida art and culture, Premier Campbell announced on July 13, 2006. Scheduled to open in 2007, the centre will house an international teaching centre, a new oral history and archives centre, a canoe house, performing arts theatre and headquarters for the world-renowned Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve. |
