PREMIERS GIVE UNANIMOUS SUPPORT TO B.C. OLYMPIC BID

HALIFAX – Canada’s provincial and territorial leaders have given unanimous support to British Columbia’s bid to host the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, Premier Gordon Campbell announced today.

“Today’s declaration by the premiers shows how unified Canada is in supporting Vancouver and British Columbia’s 2010 Olympic bid,” said Campbell. “This will provide an important step forward in our drive to win the Olympic Games.

“The 2010 Olympics will generate tremendous benefits not only for British Columbia, but for all of Canada. The Olympics are our chance to showcase the best of B.C. and the best of our country, and to show the rest of the world what British Columbians can accomplish.”

In June, the province and federal government announced they would commit a total of $620 million for core sport and event venues if Canada were chosen to host the Games. The International Olympic Committee will release its short list of candidates on Aug. 29. The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Bid Corp. will submit its bid book in January, and a final decision will be made July 2, 2003.

“I would personally like to thank the premiers for the unanimous support they have given. This will strengthen B.C.’s position as the IOC prepares its short list for the end of August.”
