VANCOUVER – A memorandum of understanding between the Province of B.C. and the State of Washington will enhance trade opportunities and create stronger ties between the two jurisdictions, Premier Gordon Campbell announced today. The MOU was signed today by Premier Campbell and Washington Governor Christine Gregoire.
“Washington is not only our neighbour, but a key trading partner and ally,” Campbell said. “Governor Gregoire has set out an ambitious strategic direction for her state that aligns well with our five great goals for B.C., and I look forward to working more closely with her to further our mutual interests.”
The MOU pledges that the two governments will work co-operatively on common goals in the areas of trade, the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the environment, tourism, technology, education, and transportation. The two leaders will also meet periodically to review issues of mutual interest and to monitor progress.
“We want to be the best neighbor possible for our friends in British Columbia,” Gregoire said. “That includes playing a vital role in the success of Vancouver as the host city to the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.”
Washington is a key trading partner for B.C.
– the state imported approximately $5.6 billion worth of goods in 2003. These
exports of oil and fuel, wood products, fish and seafood, paper products and
machinery represented 16.3 per cent of B.C.’s total exports for that year.
