CELEBRATING EDUCATION WEEK IN SASKATCHEWAN
Start your engines! Learning Minister Deb Higgins launched Education Week 2006 at Cochrane High School in Regina today, where she addressed a group of students, teachers and industry partners in the automotive shop about the value of trades and apprenticeship training in Saskatchewan schools. "Cochrane High School provides excellent examples of the practical and applied arts courses offered in our schools that introduce young people to the different kinds of work here in Saskatchewan," Higgins said. "Exposing our students to as many different career exploration and development opportunities as are available will, ultimately, assist them in making informed decisions about the career paths that are best suited for them." Trades courses offered at Cochrane High School include piping and sheet metal - a one-of-its-kind course in Saskatchewan schools - auto body, commercial cooking and cosmetology. Guests also heard from Regina Public Schools' Chairperson Ernie Pappas; Cochrane High School Grade 12 student Dakota Sunshine; and Percival Ford Lincoln Inc. Service Manager Ivan Leibel, on the importance of vocational and trades education in Saskatchewan. "We all benefit when students have the opportunity to access career development and exploration initiatives," Higgins said. "Given our labour market's current and projected needs, it is vital that our students have the best possible supports to ensure their full participation in Saskatchewan's labour market." Saskatchewan celebrates Education Week this year from October 15th-21st, with various public activities in Saskatchewan educational institutions to highlight the important efforts that occur each day within Saskatchewan's learning sector. This year's theme, Our Children…Our Schools…Our Future, was chosen to reflect the important role the K-12 education system plays in building our province. Today's event at Cochrane High School was held in conjunction with the kick-off of Library Week in Saskatchewan. In addition to today's event, Education Week activities will include Premier Lorne Calvert's presentation of the Council of the Federation (COF) Literacy Award on Wednesday, October 18th at 11:30 a.m. at the Cosmo Civic Centre, 3130 Laurier Drive, Saskatoon.-30-
