Types of Special Occasion Permits

Special occasion permits are required for anyone serving alcohol at a special event, such as a wedding, cabaret or fundraiser that is held in a location other than a private place.

Most special occasion permits can be purchased at any Saskatchewan liquor store or franchise (community event and annual permits may only be purchased through SLGA’s Head Office).

Community Event Permit

These permits are for events intended for the entire community and may be more than one day in duration. Examples include a homecoming, annual rodeo, annual fair or sports day.

Community event permits are only available to bona fide organizations, such as organizing committees, service clubs and sport groups.

Permit applications are available online at any Saskatchewan liquor store or franchise or at SLGA's Head Office. Community event permits must be approved through SLGA's Head Office. It is important you apply for the permit well in advance of your event to ensure adequate processing time.

Community event permit applicants must also submit to SLGA a resolution of approval from the municipal council in the community where the event will be held. Contact the applicable city or town council, or municipality office for more information.

Tickets for the event may be sold both in advance and at the door. Advertising is permitted, but subject to SLGA's regulations. Contact SLGA for more information.

Minors may attend the event only with SLGA approval and if accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or spouse of legal age.

Community event permits are valid for a maximum of 12 hours per day and drink prices are set by the permittee.

The fee is $75 for up to three consecutive days, and $25 for each additional day.

**If you’re planning an event for more than 1,000 people, SLGA’s Community Liaison Branch can meet with your volunteer group to discuss security, admission of minors, liability and other issues that may arise at your event. The Branch can also coordinate workshops for volunteers working as servers and for the security personnel working at the function. Contact the Community Liaison Branch for more information.

Sale Permit

These permits are for functions held to raise funds for charitable, educational, religious or community service purposes. A sale permit can also be used for social functions open to members and invited guests of an organization.

Permits are only available to bona fide organizations, such as community service or non-profit groups.

Permit applications are available online, from liquor stores, franchises, or SLGA's Head Office. Organizers should apply a minimum of 15 days in advance of the event.

Some communities may restrict events or alcohol service on Sunday. Contact the applicable town or city council, or municipality office for further information.

Tickets may be sold in advance only and advertising for members-only functions is allowed, providing the advertising states that only members and invited guests will be admitted.

Minors may attend the event only with SLGA approval and if accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or spouse of legal age.

Sale permits are valid for a maximum of eight hours and drink prices are set by the permittee.

The fee for this permit is $25.
