Early breeding efforts concentrated on developing a high yielding, drought tolerant crop species suitable for marginal wheat producing areas. More recent programs concentrate on developing improved animal feed and fodder varieties for production under a number of diverse environmental conditions.

In 2005, 65,000 ac were seeded in Saskatchewan, the average yield was 2,080 lbs/ac and approximately 65 per cent of the triticale crop graded number 1.
