TRIBUTE - Frank Sudol (1934–2006)

Frank Sudol died on Thursday, December 14, 2006 at the age of 72. A most enrapturing curmudgeon, Frank loved to engage in dialogue, and debate issues that were near and dear to him. He was generous and open with his time, his equipment and tools for any and all that needed them and he always lent his ear (and voice) with a smile.

In 1993 Frank developed a technique for piercing through thin-walled turned vessels…”to show that the natural world is fragile and delicate and in need of care.” He found himself drawn to speaking for the “voiceless” and so his woodturnings started to reflect images of wildlife, especially endangered species.

Always the experimenter, Frank started introducing other mediums into his work, even slumped glass. Frank was one of a handful of people who contributed to the success of the Emma Collaborations. He will be missed by colleagues, friends and especially, family.

PROFILE OF MIRANDA JONES

Saskatchewan Craft Council member, Miranda Jones has become not only a sought-after Gilder, but she continues to expand her creative horizons in the field of metal sculpture.

Those who collect her work, in addition to acquiring a piece of luxury art, are also, “…purchasing a piece of my own excitement and risk,” she said. Miranda radiates with the joy she finds in her work and this joy is passed on to the people who encounter her whimsical representations of animals, birds and organic abstract shapes.

FRAUD ALERT

The Nova Scotia Designer Crafts Council has recently received word of fraudulent activities targeting crafts people.

"It has been brought to our attention that one of our members has recently received a large product order through email. After requesting a deposit, the artist received a fraudulent bank draft which had been produced to duplicate a TD Canada Trust Bank Draft. The Bank Draft was missing key authenticating marks including a watermark."

If you notice anything suspicious, please contact your local RCMP.
