Livestock Inspection Program

Purpose -To confirm rightful ownership of livestock offered for sale and of livestock transported in and out of the province.

  • Producers are required to complete manifests declaring their ownership prior to transportation or inspection.
  • Inspections are required prior to sale of all livestock in Saskatchewan.
  • Livestock inspection fees are $1.65 per animal.
  • The Livestock Inspection Program also enforces regulations regarding:
    • the humane transportation of livestock;
    • licensing and bonding of livestock dealers;
    • brand registration; and
    • identification of stray animals.

Secure ownership is provided to producers by ensuring that animals are only marketed by the rightful owner. The credibility of the Livestock Inspection Program has strengthened security for lenders, livestock dealers and other institutions that provide funding for livestock purchases.

Livestock Brand Registration

Purpose - To protect producer ownership rights through registration of acceptable livestock brands.

Upon request from a producer, a livestock brand is registered according to The Brand Regulations established under The Animal Identification Act. When a brand is registered, it is in effect for four years or for a lifetime. Brands can be renewed, transferred to other owners or cancelled. Brands which are not renewed are kept on an inactive file for five years before they are eligible for reissue.

The current cost for registering a brand for four years is $25.00 or $200 for a personal lifetime brand. A corporate lifetime brand is available for twenty years at a cost of $200.

Proof of ownership of livestock is required prior to marketing animals. Applying a unique mark registered to one owner is the simplest form of permanently identifying animals.

There are approximately 19,000 registered brands in Saskatchewan. Almost 70 per cent of the livestock producers in Saskatchewan brand their animals.
